PHOTO PROMPT – © C. Hase
“You are to be reborn a human female.”
“Dude, Not human female. I wasn’t that bad, was I? I did good deeds.. cleaning up beaches…even saved about hundred seals in an oil spill.”
“You can’t break the chain of Karma!…Listen..if you really want to be male, the only opening I have is in the “Latrodectus hasseltii” species. Decide fast ..the eggs are about to hatch”
“I’ll take it”
90 days later as Mr.Latrodectus is being eaten alive by Ms.Latrodectus he recalls a past life …a human female pleading, “Honey, My biological clock is ticking”. He understands her now….but he’s stuck like a ship that was too late to catch the tide.

Note about Mr. and Ms. Lactrodectus (as per Wikipedia):
The redback spider or Latrodectus hasseltii is a species of venomous spider indigenous to Australia. It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus Latrodectus, the widow spiders.
The redback spider is one of only two animals known where the male has been found to actively assist the female in sexual cannibalism. In the process of mating, the much smaller male somersaults to place his abdomen over the female’s mouthparts. In about two of three cases, the female fully consumes the male while mating continues. Males which are not eaten die of their injuries soon after mating.

Fun read and cleverly done. I feel he was pushed into that decision. He should have been given time to consult Wiki.

Thanks! He was tricked into that decision for sure …but it was his own making…he had to learn a lesson in this rebirth and he chose the 8 legged way to learn it.

He had it coming to him – but what a way to go (again)! Very original take on the prompt!

I could have lived forever not reading about the widow spider mating details. Yuck
Do we really get a choice with Karma?

We do have a choice when we are living to accumulate good karma vs bad karma….atleast that’s what some religions say.

Very imaginative take on the prompt! And thanks for the link to the page with the spider picture on it. Yeeks! So he’d rather be a spider than a human female, huh…?

That’s another story in his not wanting to be female…..maybe in another week’s flash fiction I’ll cover that. Thanks for reading 🙂

Great take on the prompt. I think he didn’t know what the Latrodectus hasseltii species was. Bit cruel not to be told it was a red back spider. He could then have made an informed decision. Payback was too cruel.

Thanks! He made the world a bad place for women when he lived as a human male and that’s why he didn’t want to be born a human female…..Karma did give him a chance though ..to be human…but he still remained a misogynist …so he chose his cruel fate. He was the master of his payback 🙂

Dear Ansumani,
When at last it comes to choices…I wonder what he’ll come back as next. Good one.

Good question Rochelle. He will be content to be any gender next…because as he was eaten he realized that its important to be a good (human) being irrespective of gender and that he/she should make the world a better place for all when given a life.

That’ll larn yuh. Karmic justice can’t be evaded.

Spider sex better be outstanding since you only get one shot at it. Peter Parker (Spiderman) better keep that in mind.

The somersaulting part sounds like fun….but Mr.Latrodectus’s only motivation is pass on his genes 🙂

Now I’m amazed. I can’t tell you how many redback spiders I’ve zapped or thwacked, and I didn’t know that. I hope karma doesn’t get me for my murderous exterminations, but it’s no fun to find these little blighters lurking in dark corners around the house. Great story, Ansumani.

At least he get another opportunity quickly, he can work his way up to be a human female in about 10000 cycles.
